Sims Group Limited (SGM) is an international metals recycling company operating in two primary businesses: Sims Recycling Solutions and the Metal Recycling. The Sims Recycling Solutions involves the e-recycling of electronic consumer and electrical goods as well as the information technology while the Metal Recycling business of SGM is in charge of collecting, processing and marketing of both the ferrous and non-ferrous metals. SGM was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange on the 21st of October, 2005. Its average annual revenue reaches approximately $5 billion. Its headquarters is located in New South Wales, Australia and to date; around 100 employees are employed in the company. The two primary businesses mentioned above are further divided into 11 business segments: energy, aluminium, international, industrial, metal, manufacturing, plastics, mirec, steel, recycling solutions and tyre cycle.
The energy segment of Sims (SGM) is comprised of 25% interest of the Sims Group Limited in the Landfill Management Services (LMS). The aluminium segment is now the largest producer of specification grade aluminium in Australia. The aluminium produced by this segment is used in Australia as well as South East Asia’s automotive industry. The international segment is comprised of international offices network in Australia, Malaysia, China and India. These offices are in charge of managing relationships and handling major transaction with the large percentage of the client base of Sims Group Limited.
The industrial segment of Sims is in charge of assisting the handling and processing of secondary materials. The services this segment offers include furnace loading, blending and stockpile management. SGM's metal segment is one of the leading recyclers of metals in the world with primary operations in the US, UK and Australasia. The manufacturing segment, on the other hand, is involved in the recycling operations of secondary aluminium and plastics. The plastics segment of SGM is in charge of the recycling of different high-value plastics like density polyethelene. This segment is also a major recycler ofplastics from agricultural and automotive industries as well as post-consumer plastics.
The Mirec segment of SGM was formed to meet the requirements and standards set by the European and National Authorities with regard to collecting, reusing and recycling of electrical and electronic waste while the steel segment is focused on the processing and distribution of steel in Australasia, US and Papua New Guinea. The recycling solutions segment of SGM aids in the prevention of hazardous and undesirable materials that are being disposed in an unsafe and improper way while the tyre cycle segment is now the largest collector, disposer and recycler of tyres in Australia.
Sims Group Limited (SGM) Company History
Albert Sims, who was a metal dealer in Sydney, originally founded the company in 1917. The company’s original name was Albert G Sims Limited and it was later changed to Simsmetal in the year 1968. The Simsmetal and Consolidated Metal Products merged in 1970, thereby forming the Sims Consolidated.
Sims Consolidated was acquired by Peko Wallsend in 1979, and then the North Broken Hill acquired the Peko Wallsend becoming the North Broken Hill Peko. Then, they have finally decided to be as North. In 1991, Sims Group was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.
In 1997, they acquired Wibotoba Plastics, which is in Victoria, and also acquired the Virginia based company, Peck Recycling. In 1998, the company acquired Sims Bird’s minority shares in the United Kingdom after purchasing shares from the Frankel Iron and Metal business, which is a Los Angeles based company, and Ferromet.
In 2004, they purchased the Bay Bridge Enterprises’ businesses and assets and acquired the Australia’s biggest tire recycler, Devote. In addition, they also acquired Europe’s leading electrical and electronic equipment recycler, the Mirec Group of Companies. In 2005, the company and Hugo Neu merged, making it the biggest recycled metal exporters in the United States.
