Boral (BLD) is Australia's leading manufacturer and wholesaler of building and construction materials in Australia, the United States of America and Asia. Boral was created in January 2000, as a result of demerger of the old Boral Group, into two industry specific listed companies, new Boral and Origin Energy Limited. Boral listed on ASX on 21 of February, 2000. The Company is engaged in the manufactures and sale of a wide range of construction materials, comprising quarry products, cement, flyash, pre-mix concrete and asphalt; and building products, including clay bricks and pavers, clay and concrete roof tiles, concrete masonry products, plasterboard, windows and timber. Boral is organized into six major operating divisions, aligned along three business segments.
Boral has the greatest exposure to the Australian building materials sector. It has generated over 70% of EBIT in Australia. The company had been once reputed for delivering poor returns. But its performance improved through restructuring, supported by stronger demand. The Company has over A$5.0 billion worth of sales, with approximately 16,200 people employed across 717 operating sites. Boral mainly caters for clientele in the building and construction industries has significant operations in three major geographical markets - Australia, the USA and Asia. The Company holds a significant position in all three geographic markets.
Boral History
On 4 March 1946, Bitumen & Oil Refineries (Aust.) Ltd (BLD), the first Australian-owned bitumen and oil refinery, was integrated. In the late 1960s, the Company focused on the growth of its quarrying activities and stepped into the pre-mixed concrete industry. In late 1999, it was decided to divide Boral Group's building and construction materials and energy businesses into two industry-specific Australian listed companies. The demerger took place in early 2000. In early 2004, the Company bid for Adelaide Brighton.
